Water Conservation

Drought Ordinance
The city of Las Vegas adopted a drought ordinance in 2003 and has updated the ordinance in 2003, 2004 and 2005. The ordinance was a collaborative effort that was developed and adopted by eight separate agencies that control water and land use policy in the valley.

The Las Vegas Valley Water District (LVVWD) is in the final stages of retrofitting all meters with automated meter reading technology that has additional water management and conservation potential.

Managing for Unaccounted Water
Although “unaccounted for” water can vary from year to year, it is typically below four percent; well below the 10 percent threshold commonly used as an indicator of efficient management.

Water Rate Setting
The LVVWD utilizes multi-tier increasing block rate structures. These pricing structures provide financial incentive for the heaviest water users to implement conservation measures.
