Commitment To Diversity

A Message From The City Manager

The amazing growth our city has experienced in the last ten years has created a rich and diverse Las Vegas. Our residents represent almost every culture in the world and speak more than two hundred languages. I believe our commitment to diversity strengthens our organization and enables us to provide more effective service to our community. Our Diversity Initiative is aimed at tapping the unique talents and skills of all employees so that we can provide the best possible services and programs to the citizens and visitors of the city of Las Vegas. We are doing this through improved communication of ideas, openness to new ways of doing business and employee training which all lead to enhanced and efficient customer service.

By working with the community to develop programs that represent the needs and interest of the residents, we reach out to the diverse population to forge ties and create open lines of communication. Our employees also give back to the community by volunteering countless hours of service and donating tens of thousands of dollars each year to local charitable organizations.

We hire, retain and develop the best employees so that we may provide our community with the best customer service. We actively search for a diverse pool of qualified candidates to provide us with the depth of talent, skill and potential to meet our goals. We provide mentoring, career development, on-site education and tuition reimbursement programs to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to build the best career possible. We encourage and engage our diverse workforce in order to fully capitalize on their many talents, skills and potential.

We are building a world class city by providing business development, career opportunities, supplier diversity and cultural awareness. Diversity is one of three major initiatives that will become part of our business DNA. The city of Las Vegas is committed to procuring its goods, products and services from a diversified pool of vendors, contractors and professional service providers, and working with developing businesses to help them grow and flourish.

I am proud to say that our efforts have not gone unnoticed. In 2007 Las Vegas received the City Cultural Diversity Award presented by the National League of Cities. And in 2006, the Southern Nevada Human Resources Association awarded the city its Diversity Award for our efforts to promote diversity in the workplace.

Please join me in celebrating the rich diversity of our great city.
