July 12, 2012

I hope you can join me for the annual Ward 5 Summer Splash celebration Saturday, July 14, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Doolittle Community Center Pool, 1950 N. J St.! Enjoy free swimming, summer safety tips and cool summertime treats while supplies last. See the flier for details.

Please make plans to join Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Chief Mike Myers, City Manager Betsy Fretwell and me for the grand opening and a tour of Ward 5's new Fire Station 106 at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, July 17. The new station is located at 1888 Stella Lake St. See all the details here.

The annual Neighborhood Partners Fund (NPF) application process is under way, offering any registered city of Las Vegas neighborhood association the opportunity to apply for a maximum of $5,000 to help improve the quality of their neighborhood. There is still time to register and attend one of four remaining workshops scheduled during July to learn about the program and the paperless method of applying for the grant. Complete information about NPF grants is available on the city of Las Vegas website. Residents with questions can contact my office for guidance or call Maria Castillo-Couch directly at 229-6681. The deadline for applications is Aug. 9, 2012. I hope to see many Ward 5 neighborhood associations take advantage of this opportunity!

The next regularly scheduled City Council meeting is Wednesday, July 18; however, I will not be present. I will be learning more about economic development at a National League of Cities Summer Policy Forum in Nashville, Tenn. My attendance is necessary as I reside on the Community and Economic Development Steering Committee, which continues to assist me in helping Ward 5 plan for further development. In light of my absence, the only items that will be heard regarding Ward 5 are consent items that are routine. If you have concerns regarding Planning discussion items 112 and 114, please contact my office at 229-5443 as soon as possible.

See the City Council items of interest to Ward 5 residents on the July 18 agenda here. Complete meeting agendas are available on the city website.
