May 16, 2012

Las Vegas Helldorado Days are here! All the festivities – nightly rodeo, carnival, exhibits, Saturday parade and so much more – take place Thursday, May 17, through Sunday, May 20, at the downtown rodeo grounds at Stewart Avenue and 7th Street. Check out the event schedule and parking map at and make your plans to join the fun!

If you are able, I encourage you to consider donating to and attending the fourth annual "Blue Jeans and Blazers Denim Celebration and Jean Drive," to be held Saturday, May 19, at the Hard Rock Café on the Las Vegas Strip (3771 S. Las Vegas Blvd.) from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. This year's celebrity guest host is Hosea Chanchez, better known as Malik, from the hit television show "The Game," which airs on the BET network. The goal for this year is to collect at least 600 pairs of new or slightly used jeans. Donated new and gently used jeans will assist youth at The Center for Independent Living, Child Haven, Girls Circle (with Nevada Partners), and WestCare Nevada. The easiest way to participate is to attend the event Saturday and bring new or slightly used jeans with you. For more information about this event, go online.

Interested in starting a nonprofit or working with nonprofit organizations? Save the date – Saturday, June 9, 10 a.m. to noon – for my upcoming workshop at City Hall in Council Chambers. For more information on this and other upcoming Ward 5 events, please visit my Web page.

Republic Services and I want to congratulate Ward 5 residents for an outstanding response to the enhanced residential recycling program that began last summer. Since the program began, there has been a 600-percent increase in the amount of waste that has been diverted to recycling. Thanks so much to everyone who contributed to this success!

Drinking water delivered through the Las Vegas Valley Water District system can sometimes appear cloudy or "milky" in color. This cloudiness is generally the result of air trapped in the water. While this may impact the water's appearance, it has no impact on its safety and does not harm household plumbing systems. For more information, click here.
