Volunteer Opportunities

There are many ways you can volunteer to work with the homeless. There are short-term and long-term projects available to work directly with the homeless or behind the scenes. Below are just a few opportunities.

Complete list of volunteer opportunities

Project Homeless Connect - This event helps thousands of homeless people each year receive sorely needed services such as help with food, clothing, grooming, housing, transportation, job training, health care, mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment, child care, veteran services, legal services and employment. Volunteers are needed in all areas. For more information, please visit www.helphopehome.org .

Bi-annual Homeless Census –  In an attempt to end homelessness, the U.S. Congress has required that governments receiving federal funds under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act must conduct regular counts of their homeless population. It is the intention that the results of this research will assist service providers, policy makers, funding sources and local, state and federal governments to better understand and plan for the needs of the homeless population by examining current statistics. The Homeless Census has taken place the last week of January in 2007 and 2009. The next one is scheduled for January 2011. Copies of previous census reports can be found at www.helphopehome.org .

Compassion Stations - There are not enough shelters to offer relief to our local homeless population during the extreme temperatures of the summer and winter months. A dangerous situation is created for our homeless population when temperatures reach the extreme highs and lows. Your organization can help by becoming a Compassion Station, which provides shelter from exposure to the elements. Compassion Stations allow our homeless a place to sit and have access to fresh water. Some of our local faith and community organizations have partnered with us by opening up their sanctuaries and/or multi-purpose rooms for the homeless to come in temporarily out of the heat but we never have enough.
