January 8, 2010

It's hard to believe another year has passed. As we enter 2010, I would like to wish everyone a very Happy New Year! We have been facing challenging economic times for the past couple of years but with the ongoing efforts of Ward 5 residents, community volunteers and my great staff, we accomplished so much in 2009.

Many groups and organizations dedicated to Ward 5 assisted me and my staff with numerous projects and activities including neighborhood beautification efforts, food drives for seniors, youth and family activities, community resource fairs and much more.  Their hard work through countless hours of volunteering has made a huge impact on the quality of life for many. As a team, we have really made a difference by building strong partnerships and working together. A special thanks goes to all who donated their time, talents and efforts.

I am excited about several downtown projects that kicked off or were completed in 2009. Read more about the Ward 5 accomplishments for 2009. Please also view the major projects quarterly report for Ward 5.

I also wanted to make you aware of some very important Town Hall meetings taking place this month and next.

The city is holding several Town Hall meetings throughout the city to inform you about important budget issues, including potential reductions in programs and services, and a summary of the "Your City, Your Way" resident survey results. The meetings will also include information on Census 2010, a presentation by City Manager Betsy Fretwell and time set aside for questions and answers from citizens.

The two meetings in Ward 5, in which I and Mayor Oscar Goodman will be attending, are:

  • Jan. 19, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. - Ward 5: City Council Chambers, 400 Stewart Ave.
  • Feb. 24, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. - Ward 5: Southern Nevada Health District / Clemens Room, 625 Shadow Lane

View the rest of the Town Hall schedule.

I encourage you to attend these important meetings.

We had a busy and productive 2009 with many great projects and additions to our community. Building and maintaining strong neighborhoods will continue to be my priority in 2010. I plan to keep working closely with Ward 5 residents, businesses and other groups and organizations assisting with issues and concerns. Your input is very valuable to me. No one knows a neighborhood better than those working and residing in them. My staff and I are committed to serving the needs of Ward 5 and look forward to working with you. All issues, no matter how big or small, matter to us.

Happy New Year!  I wish you and your family a wonderful 2010.
