Cooking Fire Heavily Damages Condo Unit
One Person Is Displaced Due To Fire

Fire dispatchers received multiple 9-1-1 calls at 6 p.m. that heavy flames were coming out of the window of a condo unit at the Desert Garden Townhomes, 1720 W. Bonanza Rd.

When firefighters arrived, heavy flames were coming out of the downstairs window of a two-story wood frame/stucco condo building with 12 units.  The fire was extending into the upstairs bedroom window when firefighters arrived.  Firefighters quickly entered the unit and brought the fire under control in about three minutes.

Firefighters were able to confine the fire to the one condo unit.  The unit where the fire occurred was the end condo of the building, which has 12 units.  The condo had heavy fire and heat damage on the first floor and heat and smoke damage on the second floor.  The unit next door had slight smoke damage.  Damage was estimated at $35,000.

The fire was ruled accidental due to the unattended cooking.  The only occupant of the condo told fire investigators that she was cooking on the stove and stopped to take a rest and ended up falling asleep.  When she woke she found the condo full of smoke and the stove on fire.

The American Red Cross is assisting the only occupant of the unit who will be displaced.  There were no reported injuries due to the fire.

This is the first working fire in the city of Las Vegas this year.  Cooking fires are the leading reason of fires in Las Vegas as well as the rest of the country.  Unattended cooking is the main reason for cooking fires.
