Fire Damages Downtown Motel
Pet Dog Dies In Fire, Two People Are Displaced

Las Vegas firefighters responded to the Safari Motel, 2001 Fremont St. at 8:08 Sunday evening after someone reported that a bush against the building was on fire. While Engine Four was responding down Fremont Street, a large column of smoke could be seen coming from the building. A full fire alarm assignment for a building fire was then dispatched.

When Engine Four arrived on scene, flames were shooting out a window of the one-story motel with approximately 25 units. The fire was in an apartment that is connected to the manager’s office; it is the apartment that the manager resides in.

Firefighters entered the office and then the apartment and were able to put the fire out in five minutes. The fire was confined mostly to the bedroom, which was gutted. There was heat and smoke damage throughout the rest of the apartment and office. Damage was estimated at $25,000.

Fire investigators believe the fire started on the mattress in the unit. The manager was home at the time, but was unable to tell investigators how the fire started.

The cause of the fire is undetermined; fire investigators could not rule out careless smoking.

A small pet dog that lives with the manager and his girlfriend was killed in the fire.

The American Red Cross arrived on scene and was checking to see if anyone needed assistance. The man and woman that live in the manager’s office are displaced.

There were no injuries in connection with the incident.

About 20 people were staying in the motel at the time of the fire in other units.  No other units were damaged by the fire.
