Review Of Las Vegas Fire Department Available Online
Study By ICMA Posted To City’s Website, Direct Link

“By posting the study online, people have the opportunity to draw their own conclusions,” said City Manager Elizabeth N. Fretwell. “We realize the report is lengthy, but it does have a very concise executive summary at the beginning that offers an excellent synopsis of the findings. The recommendations line out a path we can follow to achieve our goal of creating a sustainable fire department budget that still provides excellent public safety.”

Since 2004, the LVFR budget has grown from $77 million to $111 million, which is a 43 percent increase. These types of increases are unsustainable and will eventually create a huge budget shortfall, impacting the funding for other critical city services.

The purpose of the study is to determine ways the LVFR can continue to provide high-quality public safety, but do it more efficiently. The city retained the ICMA Center for Public Safety Management to identify best practices already in place and offer recommendations and alternatives to improve current services both operationally and fiscally.

The review, which began in July 2012, offers 23 separate recommendations, with eight considered priority.

The study was released this week. City management will work with the LVFR and its union to explore these recommendations and determine next steps.
