Walgreen’s Drug Store Damaged By Fire
Workers and Customers Escape Without Injury

Las Vegas and Clark County firefighters responded to the Walgreen’s Drug Store, 9300 W. Sahara Ave., (Sahara/Ft. Apache) at 8:22 Wednesday morning.

The store manager smelled something burning, but could not find the source.  As he kept checking, he went into the store’s storage area and found burning embers falling from the ceiling.  He first tried using a fire extinguisher on the burning material, but that did not seem to work.  He then called 9-1-1 for help and ordered the store evacuated of all workers and customers.  At the same time, several passersby were calling 9-1-1 to report smoke from the roof of the store.

Firefighters arrived within minutes and found the fire above the ceiling and below the roof, but the fire had already burned through the roof.  Firefighters had the fire out in just a minute.

The fire damaged a large area above the ceiling in the storage room and the roof over the storage room.  Cause of the fire could not be determined by fire investigators, although they did rule it accidental.  The retail area of the store had minor smoke damage.  Damage was estimated at $150,000.

The store will remain closed until repairs are made.
