Candle Starts Fire In Apartment
Family Of Five Is Displaced After Fire

A family of five escaped their burning apartment early Saturday morning after a candle started a fire in one of the bedrooms. The American Red Cross is assisting two adults, two teens and one child. There were no reported injuries during the incident.
Fire dispatchers received numerous calls at 12:20 a.m. Saturday that a downstairs apartment at 4027 Silver Dollar Ave. (Sahara/Valley View) was on fire. When firefighters arrived four minutes later, flames were shooting out every window and door of the apartment in the two story concrete block apartment building. Metro police officers arrived on scene first and evacuated the entire apartment building as firefighters arrived on scene.
It took firefighters ten minutes to knock down the intense fire. The fire completely gutted the three bedroom apartment. None of the other apartments in the building were damaged. Damage was estimated at $60,000.
The occupants told fire investigators that candles were burning in one of the bedrooms. The person in that bedroom fell asleep. Later they woke and found the top of the dresser where the candles were on fire. They tried smothering the fire with a blanket, but they were not able to put the fire out. All of the occupants then escaped the burning apartment including a pet dog.
The fire was ruled accidental.
