Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How do fines escalate on parking citations?  Fines are due within 30 days from the date of issue.  If the payment is not paid in full by the 30 days, the ticket will assess the first penalty, which is the same amount of the fine.  If the ticket is not paid in full including all penalties by 45 days from the date of issue, the ticket will assess the second penalty, which is the same amount of the original fine.   Example:  $20 fine, if paid after 30 days $40 is due, if paid after 45 days $60 is due.

  2. What if I don't agree with my citation and want to appeal? A person who receives a citation for a parking violation from the city of Las Vegas is given the opportunity to respond by contacting the Parking Services Office as part of an administrative review process.  If you disagree with the Administrative Review decision, the Municipal Code allows for a formal Appeal Process with the assigned Hearing Officer. Appeal Request Forms may be found on our website and can be submitted through either an In-Person Appeal request or a Non-Appearance Appeal request.  If the person appealing is not the registered owner of the vehicle, we will require acknowledgement and authorization from the registered owner to proceed with the appeal.

  3. What if I don't pay my citation(s)?  If the citation is not paid, fines could increase up to triple the amount of the original fine.  Refer to question #1.  After 90 days, the Department of Motor Vehicles will be notified of outstanding citations which, will result in a suspension hold of the vehicle’s registration until full payment is made. If you have a hold on your registration and pay your citation on-line, your DMV hold release may take up to 48 hours. Contact our office to ensure the DMV registration hold has been released.

  4. I received a parking citation on a rental car while visiting Las Vegas, am I still responsible? Yes, however, notification will be sent to the Rental Car agency as legal registered owner.  As a renter, your agreement with the Rental Company holds you responsible for any citations so if the ticket goes unpaid, the Rental Company may choose to pay the citation and bill you for the amount of the citation plus their administrative fees.  The only citation you are not liable for is any Unregistered Vehicle citations.

  5. I was not operating my vehicle when the citation was issued.  Am I still responsible?  Yes, the registered owner of the vehicle is ultimately responsible for payment of a parking citation.

  6. I received a ticket for Handicap Parking, but I have a valid Handicap placard issued, am I still responsible?  If you can provide us a copy of your driver’s license and a copy of your valid handicap placard that was active/valid at the time of the citation, you may be eligible for a fine reduction.  Please contact our office for additional instructions.

  7. I received a ticket for Registration Not Displayed, but my vehicle was registered, am I still responsible?  If your vehicle was registered or had a valid temporary moving permit issued prior to the date of the citation, but was not properly displayed on your windshield or the decal sticker was not properly displayed on your rear license plate, please provide a copy of these documents and the fine will be administratively reduced to a $25 failure to properly display fee.

  8. Why do I have to mail my city payment to Los Angeles, CA?  Through a competitive selection process, the city of Las Vegas selected Bank of America (BofA) to provide banking services. BofA’s central payment processing center for our region is located in Los Angeles, CA. That is the reason city of Las Vegas customers are asked to send their local payments to the payment processing center in California (e.g., sewer payments, parking tickets, business licenses, and SID payments).

    Large banks offer a service called "lockbox" to their clients. A lockbox service is simply a central payment processing facility that handles high volume payment transactions very quickly and efficiently. The processing centers are regionally located to serve geographic areas. They provide high speed service that allow for payments to be posted and balanced in an expeditious manner, both to our bank account as well as to the customer's utility account. The use of lockbox services is considered a "best practice" among all the public and private financial associations. In fact, the Government Finance Officers Association recommends the use of regional lockbox services in areas where local services are inadequate.

    Although your payments are mailed to Los Angeles, they are deposited directly to our Las Vegas bank account with BofA. Like many other large cities and companies, we have found that the utilization of these processing centers is very cost effective as it saves the city a great deal in personnel cost and overtime. Although we cannot always operate like a "business" because we are a municipal government, in many instances, such as with banking services, we try to act responsibly with taxpayer dollars by being cost effective and efficient.

  9. I received a ticket for oversized vehicle, what are the restrictions?
    Las Vegas Municipal Code 11.52.305  states Except as otherwise provided in this Section, it is unlawful for a person to stand, park or store, upon any residential street, a commercial vehicle, recreational vehicle, trailer, or any combination of vehicle and trailer having an overall length of (24 ft.) twenty-four feet or more OR an unladen weight in excess of (8,000 lbs.) eight thousand pounds.

  10. I received a ticket for Parking my RV/Motorhome in front of my house, what are the restrictions?
    A person may park a recreational vehicle upon a residential street in front of property from which or to which passengers and travel items will be loaded or unloaded, but only: (1) For a period not to exceed (48) forty-eight consecutive hours; and (2) an RV permit has been issued for recreational vehicle parking.  More information about RV Parking Permits can be found on the main page of this website under Online RV permits.

  11. How do the new meters work?
    The city has installed new multi-space meters throughout the downtown area.  Rates and maximum times are posted on the meters as well as some additional information that pertains to that particular parking zone.  For example, some meters are enforced during day time hours and in the evening hours the spaces convert to “taxi only” zones.  It is important that all relevant signage posted is adhered to when parking at a metered space.  Meters will take coin and credit cards and in most cases time can be extended using the extend code printed on the receipt.  See the attached video for a short demonstration.

  12. Is there a way to extend time on the meter by Cell Phone?
    Yes, the city has adopted two applications by which to pay and extend time on a meter. For on–street parking meters, download the Parkmobile app, available for iPhone, Android, Windows, BlackBerry and Amazon devices, and for the metered parking lots, download the PassportParking app for iPhone and Android devices. The apps will send reminders when your meter time is about to expire. They will also allow you to download your parking receipts.

    The parking lots included in the program are the: Goldspike Lot at 208 N. Las Vegas Blvd.; Carson Lot at 200 S. Las Vegas Blvd.; Matlock Lot at 408 E. Clark Ave.; DTC Lot at 300 N. Casino Center Blvd.; Downtowner Lot at 108 N. Eighth St.; Container Park Lot at 146 S. Seventh St.; Llama Lot at 900 Fremont St.; and the Symphony Park Lot at 850 W. Clark Ave.

  13. What if I do business downtown often, is there a parking permit program?
    Yes, the city manages several parking lots and has on-street parking permits available.  Please contact the parking services office or visit the Parking Permits section of this website.
