Fire In Vacant Downtown Apartment Building Under Investigation
No Reported Injuries During Incident

Las Vegas firefighters responded to a vacant downtown apartment building after fire dispatchers received several calls at 10:29 Saturday night that a building was on fire.

The fire was in a vacant two-story concrete block apartment building at 1424 S. Third Street (at Utah/Las Vegas Blvd).  When firefighters arrived, thick smoke surrounded the building like a thick fog making it difficult to see the extent of the fire.  At first it was believed it was an exterior fire.  It turned out the fire was in a stairwell from the first to second floor of the building that has 12 units. The fire extended into the attic. Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in just a few minutes.  Fire was confined to the stairwell and a couple of units.  A damage estimate was not immediately available.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.  The building is vacant and was boarded it.  There were indications that homeless people were staying in the building.  There were also reports that a couple of people were staying in the building to do some renovation work. Those people could not be located.

The incident remains under investigation.  There were no reported injuries.
