City Of Las Vegas Offers Fall Swimming Lessons At Two Pools
Drowning Continues As The Leading Cause Of Unintentional Death For Children Ages 1-4

The city of Las Vegas continues to offer swimming lessons through mid-December at both Municipal Pool and Pavilion Center Pool. Teaching children to swim is recommended to prevent drowning. Lessons at the indoor Municipal Pool, located at 431 E. Bonanza Road, are offered Mondays/Wednesdays evenings, Tuesday/Thursday evenings, Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Lessons at the indoor Pavilion Center Pool, located at 101 S. Pavilion Center Drive, are offered Mondays/Wednesdays, Tuesdays/Thursdays/ and Fridays starting at 4, 5, 6 and 7 p.m. and Saturday mornings. Group lessons cost $25 for six lessons. Private lessons are priced at $100 for six 45-minute sessions; semi-private lessons (two or three students) cost $50 for six 45-minute sessions. See the information available online for detailed lesson registration information or call (702) 229-6309 for assistance.

Every year, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission compiles an end-of-summer drowning report to track the toll of child drowning nationwide. According to information reported by the media and compiled by the USA Swimming Foundation, more than 200 children under 15 years of age drowned in a pool or spa during the 2013 summer season from Memorial Day to Labor Day weekends; 143 of those children were under the age of 5. Young children and toddlers are especially vulnerable to drowning in pools and spas. Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death among children 1 to 4 years old.

Data from the USA Swimming Foundation also indicates that nationwide 70 percent of African-American children, 60 percent of Hispanic children and 40 percent of Caucasian children cannot swim. Children who cannot swim are more likely to drown. See the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission end-of-summer drowning report for more details.

Municipal Pool open swim hours through Dec. 14 are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday, noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, closed Sunday.  Adult lap swim is offered Monday-Friday, 4 to 8 p.m. Pavilion Center Pool open swim hours through Dec. 14 are noon to 3 p.m. Saturdays.  The pool is open for adult lap swim 4:30 to 8 p.m. Monday-Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, closed Sunday.
