Fire Sprinkler Puts Out Fire In Grocery Store
Cause of Fire Is Under Investigation

Las Vegas firefighters responded to the Smith’s Food & Drug store, 1421 N. Jones Blvd. (at Vegas) at 4:38 Friday afternoon after someone reported the store was on fire.

Several bags of snacks caught fire in the middle of the store. The fire traveled upward on the rack filled with various snacks until it activated an automatic fire sprinkler directly overhead. Once the head activated, the fire was knocked down enough for an employee to use a fire extinguisher to make sure the fire was out.

Store employees said they first smelled smoke and then saw the flames growing and reaching the ceiling just before the sprinkler activated.

Fire damage was confined to approximately 10-20 bags of snacks. Smoke spread throughout the store and destroyed several food items. That caused most of the damage from the fire. Damage was estimated at $80,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

There were no reported injuries during the incident.
