Join The Las Vegas Ride For Reading May 10
Free Bike Ride Collects Children’s Books And Opens New Bike Facility At Rotary Park

The Las Vegas City Council, Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) and Ward 1 Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian invite residents to the free Ride for Reading Friday, May 10, from 9 a.m. to noon. The bike ride begins and ends at the RTC’s administrative building parking lot at 600 S. Grand Central Parkway, just south of Bonneville Avenue. Registration begins at 9 a.m. The ride will begin at 9:30 a.m., pausing for healthy refreshments and a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new bike and pedestrian facility in Rotary Park, located at 901 Hinson St. Free refreshments will be provided while supplies last. The ride will then continue to Vegas Verdes Elementary School, where the books will be donated to the children during a lunchtime gathering.

Donation boxes for new and gently used children’s books are located at all city of Las Vegas fire stations and community centers, the Development Services Center, Las Vegas City Hall, the RTC, and many area bicycle shops. Books also will be accepted at the ride registration. Donated books will be delivered to Vegas Verdes Elementary School.

“I encourage everyone with a bicycle who is available to join in this fun ride to support reading and open our new facility in Rotary Park,” said Councilwoman Tarkanian. “Bring those children’s books your family no longer uses and let’s put them to good use teaching others to read.”

The event is held under the auspices of the national Ride for Reading organization, with sponsors including the city of Las Vegas, Councilwoman Tarkanian, the RTC, Look Out Kids About, McDonalds, Clark County School District and the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District.
