Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian To Recognize Great American Smokeout Tomorrow At City Park
Councilwoman Spearheaded Initiative To Install ‘Butts Only Boxes’ In City Parks

Ward 1 Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian will help recognize the Great American Smokeout tomorrow, Nov. 15, during an event where she will discuss the recent installation of “butts only boxes” in several city parks. The event will take place at 9:30 a.m. near the children’s area at Woofter Park located at Rock Springs and Vegas Drive. Samir Qamar, CEO of Medlion Direct Primary Care, will speak about the health concerns related to smoking, and Ken Beckstead of Cigarette Pollution Solutions will explain the use of the receptacles.

The councilwoman spearheaded an initiative to install the receptacles at some of the city’s parks due to the problem with cigarette litter, especially near children’s play areas. One of the receptacles is also located at City Hall. The boxes are designed solely for disposing of cigarettes and are designed to prevent people from placing their hands inside.

The event will coincide with the 37th Great American Smokeout on Nov. 15, by encouraging smokers to use the date to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking that day. By quitting — even for one day — smokers will be taking an important step toward a healthier life – one that can lead to reducing cancer risk.
