Las Vegas Fire & Rescue To Pay Tribute To Fallen of 9/11
Event Has Been Held For The Past Ten Years

Members of Las Vegas Fire & Rescue  will join with fire departments across the country  in paying tribute to those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001,  during  a simple remembrance being held at all city fire stations Tuesday morning. This special remembrance has been held for the past 10 years.
At 6:59 a.m. firefighters will gather at the flagpole in front of each city fire station as the sound of three sets of bell tones will be broadcasted over Las Vegas Fire & Rescue's communications channel in tribute to those who died on 9/11.

The ringing of the bell is longtime tradition of the fire service known as the “tolling of the bells.” For years, before radio communications existed in the fire service, communication was accomplished by bells mounted in fire stations.
If a firefighter were killed in the line of duty, fire dispatch would ring the bell in sets of five, three times.  This would let everyone on the department know that a firefighter had just lost his or her life in the line of duty.

In addition to the ringing of the bells, a special U.S. flag that once flew over the World Trade Center will be hoisted to half-staff on the flagpole in front of Las Vegas Fire Station Five, which is located at 1020 Hinson Road (located at West Charleston Boulevard and Hinson).  On display in front of the station is a piece of steel from the World Trade Center.  The piece was placed there when the new fire station five was dedicated on Sept. 11, 2004.  The metal is on permanent display in front of the station at all times for the public to visit. The city of New York has requested that the special flag be flown over the piece of steel at half-staff each Sept. 11.  It has been done every year since the city received the flag in 2004.

The public is invited to join firefighters at any of the city fire stations during the tribute on Tuesday morning.

Flags will be at half-staff on Sept. 11, at all city of Las Vegas fire stations in observance of Patriot Day.
