City Council To Recognize Tour Of Duty Bicycle Ride
First Responders From The United States And Australia To Participate

The Las Vegas City Council will recognize the 2012 Tour of Duty Bicycle Ride at the Wednesday, Aug. 15, City Council meeting that will begin at 9 a.m. in City Hall council chambers, located at 495 S. Main St.

The Tour of Duty Ride brings together personnel from the military, police and fire and rescue services to bike from San Diego to New York City. The purpose of the event is to show respect for active duty military and local first-responders, and to also remember all of those who responded to the devastating attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

In addition, Councilman Bob Coffin will recognize longtime Las Vegas resident Betty Rumford and the Mesquite Club. On Feb. 10, 1911, a group of 20 women gathered at a house on Fourth Street for the purpose of forming a women’s club. Today the Mesquite Club holds the distinction of being the oldest women’s charitable organization in Nevada.

Also, Councilman Ricki Y Barlow, will recognize the efforts of the Olive Garden restaurant chain to work with Westview Services in Las Vegas. Westview assists adults with disabilities in gaining skills to work in a normal competitive environment.

Councilman Barlow will also recognize the Las Vegas Hawks baseball team. The Hawks recently traveled to Cooperstown, New York, the home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, where they won a tournament.

Finally, Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman will recognize the August Employee of the Month.
